Nearly 900 nursery and primary school staff, as well as guests, attended the event, and there was widespread satisfaction with the lectures and workshops on offer.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe seminar was part of the town's literacy project, which was launched last year. The project aims to promote and support pupils' learning through comprehensive measures based on assessments, screenings and interventions in reading throughout the nursery and primary school.<\/p>\n<p>The session was opened by the chair, Ingibj\u00f6rg Einarsd\u00f3ttir, office manager at the School Office. R\u00f3sa Gu\u00f0bjartsd\u00f3ttir, Chair of the Education Committee, addressed the conference and said, among other things: \u201eWe have everything we need in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur to improve academic achievement and be at the forefront, \u2013 excellent staff, schools and students, and we need to find out what can be done to improve academic achievement \u2013 and respond immediately and responsibly by getting on with the job. And that is certainly being done with this well-crafted and thorough literacy project that has been launched in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>The symposium was based on two keynote lectures by Dr Hermundur Sigmundsson and Dr Freyja Birgisd\u00f3ttir.
