This morning, Mayor Haraldur L\u00edndal Haraldsson and Gu\u00f0r\u00fan \u00de\u00f3r\u00f0ard\u00f3ttir, chairperson of the \u00c1s Support Association, signed a service agreement for a residential unit for disabled people at Klukkuvellir in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
In 2013, the City of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur and the \u00c1s Support Association signed a letter of intent for \u00c1s to build and operate three residential units for people with disabilities in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur. The foundation stone for the first unit, at Klukkuv\u00f6llar, was laid on 3 February 2014.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The agreement signed this morning is a supplement to the residential options already available in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, as 10 homes for disabled people are already run by the municipality of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u00c1s Support Association intends to continue with the planned development once the necessary preparations for the next plots are complete.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
It is expected that six residents will be able to move into Kirkjuvellina this summer.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Haraldur L\u00edndal Haraldsson, the mayor, says the agreement with \u00c1s Support Association is a landmark deal for the municipality. \u201eThe approach taken through this partnership will enable the municipality to develop specialised residential solutions in a shorter time and more cost-effective manner than before,\u201c says Haraldur.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Gu\u00f0laug Kristj\u00e1nsd\u00f3ttir, chair of the family council, says the agreement is a great cause for celebration, as it is important that the town offers a variety of living arrangements for disabled people. \u201eWe look forward to seeing life come into the house on Klukkuv\u00f6llar this summer and will follow up to ensure the plans for the other two houses are also realised.\u201c<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Talks are currently underway with Handicap International regarding the construction of a facility to replace an existing home that no longer meets required standards, and further ideas for residential solutions for young people with disabilities are in the pipeline.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
