The Year 7 class of \u00c1sheima, \u00c1sland School, won a prize for a tobacco-free classroom in 2015, an annual competition run by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer.\u00a0 They made an educational video which they called \u201eThis is why I'm not going to smoke\u201d and were one of ten classes nationwide to be awarded for their initiative.<\/p>\n
Soon after it became clear they had won, they decided on little else but to donate the prize money to charity and thus give back to the community. UNICEF was chosen as a trusted organisation that helps children around the world in a targeted and constructive way. The children decided to donate the money to Nepal, as they had been following the news about the disaster that struck the nation following an earthquake earlier in the year.<\/p>\n
\u00a0At the graduation ceremony of \u00c1slandssk\u00f3li, the pupils presented the Executive Director of UNICEF in Iceland, Bergsteinn J\u00f3nsson, with 110,000 kr. They then happily headed out into the summer, hoping to make life easier for children who are not enjoying the same opportunities as those here in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.<\/p>\n
