The days are starting to get longer, and every day in March has brought us closer to summer in many respects. Residents are starting to get their bikes out, and a great deal of life is beginning to return to the town as a whole. On fine days, many residents and an increasing number of tourists make their way to the centre of Hafnarfjörður to experience and enjoy themselves; swimming pools and museums are well-attended, and shopping in the town centre is booming. Several new venues, including restaurants, have opened across the town and have immediately become popular. A new venue is about to open in Hafnarborg. All of this bodes well for the future.

A Cleaner Hafnarfjörður

Cleaning up and environmental issues are very much on my mind these days. The snow is about to disappear from the town's streets, and the coming days and weeks will be dedicated, among other things, to a major clean-up after a heavy and rather difficult winter. A great deal of grit remains on both the pavements and the town's roads, and the coming days and weeks will be dedicated, among other things, to cleaning all the relevant areas. At the same time, vegetation, railings and kerbs that have been damaged this winter need to be inspected. All these pending tasks will be best accomplished through a joint effort by all parties involved. I hope that residents, pupils in schools of all levels, and staff of the municipality, its institutions and local businesses will get to work and clean their local areas thoroughly over the coming days and weeks. Together, we can make Hafnarfjörður cleaner in a very short space of time and create the appearance we want for our beautiful Fjord. At the beginning of May, the council will be launching a clean-up week, specifically from the 2nd to the 12th of May, and planning for this week is now underway. I am pleased to say that a number of residents have already approached us with ideas for a community clean-up initiative. I know that throughout the town there are socially responsible and proactive residents, and I am confident that a united effort will make our town clean.

Planning matters and vacant plots in Hafnarfjörður

Proposed amendments to the detailed and master plans of the Borough of Hafnarfjörður are always advertised, and those who believe they have an interest are asked to submit written comments on the amendment within a specified time frame. In March, changes to the detailed and master plans in Skarðshlíð were advertised, and in April, changes to Hnoðravellir, Kvistavellir and Einivellir have been advertised. Regarding Skarðshlíð, it is planned that the area intended for a care home, health centre, school and nursery will now become a school and nursery, and that the residential area will be extended into the area designated for community services. Around the April-May transition, we expect to advertise plots for blocks of flats in Skarðshlíð. It is anticipated that around 215 flats will be built in the area over the next year, including small and convenient flats for families with children. Regarding industrial plots, demand has increased significantly and there is great interest among companies in locating their operations in Völlum and Hellum. It is highly likely that work on the flyover will begin in autumn 2016, or at least be put out to tender with a completion date in 2017, which will greatly improve access to and safety in the area.

Would you like to join our team of staff?

At present, a number of varied jobs within the City of Hafnarfjörður are advertised. This is a busy time for us in terms of recruitment, with the summer ahead and a new school year. There are a number of varied jobs available for application within Hafnarfjörður's primary and nursery schools, and the application deadline for creative summer jobs and jobs for young people over the age of 16 is about to expire. Registration for the work school will open at the end of the month.

As in February, I have put together an overview of some of the projects we have been working on this month.

Governance

Grants from the Helga and Bjarni Memorial Fund. Three projects received a grant from the Helga and Bjarni Memorial Fund at the beginning of the month. The app 'Orðagull', which enhances vocabulary, working memory, auditory processing and expression. Homework support for students from foreign backgrounds, as well as a grant to the sports club Fjörður to develop its sports school.

Glass on neighbourhood stations. In Hafnarfjörður, there are kerbside collection containers in seven locations. At all the sites, there are containers for paper, plastic and, since February, for glass. Glass collection will improve the quality of compost production, and it is also used as a filling material in construction, in the same way as gravel. This reduces quarrying and the environmental impact of such activities.

Clear bag for waste. There is now a greater emphasis on sending paper, cardboard, textiles and clothing to a recycling stream instead of being sent to landfill. It is no longer permitted to throw black bin bags into the compactor containers at Sörpa, and only waste in clear bags will be accepted. An all-too-large proportion of rubbish is paper and clothes, and this is one of the measures being taken to reduce the amount sent to landfill from recycling centres.

Bright days. The cultural festival will be held from 20th to 24th April. Bjartir dagar is a participatory festival which relies on active organisations and individuals taking part in creating and organising events. The programme is currently being finalised and will be announced in the coming days.

Reykjavík Loves – collaboration. The brand Reykjavík Loves will be used to market the capital region as a whole to international tourists. Municipalities in the capital region intend to work more closely together on marketing, events and information matters in tourism, and to work towards spreading an increased number of tourists more throughout the capital region. Here in Hafnarfjörður, we have everything to offer. A vibrant town centre, a charming harbour area, unspoilt nature, museums, swimming pools and all the relevant shops and services.

Eco-friendly printing service. We emphasise the responsible use of paper and have for many years focused on reducing waste in our daily operations. The children's choir festival is an annual event and was held for the 19th time.

Youth Parliament. The Youth Council of Hafnarfjörður organised a Youth Assembly in March, but such assemblies are held regularly, thereby creating a platform for young people to express their ideas and opinions. The topics of discussion at the assembly were the environment and planning, education, social life and culture, and prevention. School matters were considered the most interesting this time.

The Great Reading Competition 2016. A number of pupils from Hafnarfjörður's primary schools received an award for their excellent reading and presentation at the Great Reading Festival, and three of the very best were given special prizes. Hafnarborg was packed to capacity, and the festival has clearly become an important part of the school and parent community across the country. A project whose original roots can be traced back to us in Hafnarfjörður.

Out with the tyre iron. It has been decided to replace all the rubber crumb on the football pitches at the town's primary schools. The work is scheduled for completion in autumn 2016.

Cultural Days at Áslandsskóli. Hafnarfjörður – my town was the theme of the cultural days at Áslandsskóli. The Summer Job Scheme primarily focuses on environmental matters, thus playing a major role in the cleaning and beautification of the town.
