The past few days have been spent sweeping the streets and pavements of Hafnarfjörður, and now it's time for a community clean-up where all residents, students, and staff of businesses and institutions in the area are encouraged to take an active part. With a concerted community clean-up effort, where everyone thinks about their local area, Hafnarfjörður will be clean and tidy in no time.

„Sweep away the shit, so someone will want a little“ *

An annual clean-up campaign in Hafnarfjörður will take place from 2nd to 16th May. During this period, council workers will be busy cleaning throughout Hafnarfjörður, and residents are also being urged to take an active part by cleaning their own properties and immediate surroundings. Many hands make light work. This time of year is often quite a mess in many ways; the ground is grey and brown after the winter's onslaught, and litter that has been hidden under the snow until now is scattered about. We live well here in Hafnarfjörður, with our beautiful town centre, charming harbour area, and cohesive residential and business districts, not to mention our natural gems found both within and outside the town. Residents want to enjoy all this and proudly invite family, friends and relatives for cultural and recreational trips to the beautiful bay. Increasingly, tourists are also starting to visit the town, and their numbers are expected to grow in the coming months. We want our town to be clean and tidy. That will only happen with a concerted effort from everyone.

Harvest Festival of Cleansing

That 12th May Employees of companies and institutions, along with pupils and teachers of all school levels in Hafnarfjörður, are encouraged to look closely at their local environment and to take special action to clean up. Containers will be placed at three locations in Hafnarfjörður, primarily intended for the disposal of timber and iron from businesses in each respective area. The containers will be on site for two full days – Thursday 12 May and Friday 13 May. At the end of the day on 12 May, from 18:00 to 19:00, there will be a get-together with light refreshments at Ásvallalaug. All residents and staff of businesses and institutions are welcome to a light reception after a job well done.

See map with the location of the containers here

Spring Clean-up – Garden waste collection

Town officials will be out and about in the town on the days 16th – 22nd May. Garden waste in Norðurbær, Vesturbær, Hraun and the town centre will be collected on 16 May; in Setberg, Kinnur and Hvammur on 18 May; and in Ásland, Vellir and Holt on 22 May. Residents in these areas are encouraged to have their garden waste placed outside their property boundaries for the designated collection days for each respective neighbourhood. Please note that all garden waste must be in bags, and bear in mind that reasonably weighted bags make the work easier for our staff. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this service provided by the council. Once the spring clean-up is over, owners and landowners will have to take garden waste to Sorpa themselves – information on opening hours can be found on the Sorpa website: www.sorpa.is It is also ideal to collect garden waste over the summer in a compost heap in a convenient place in the garden and use it for composting.

See the map with the ward divisions and the set date here.

Let's clean and beautify our Fjord!

Reference to the song 'The Vacuum Cleaner Is on Full' by Ólafur Haukur Símonarson is used with the kind permission of the author.

Skúra | Skrúbba | Bóna Við erum sannarlega dottin í hreinsunargírinn.
