The Education Committee of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur has just approved, at its meeting, the recommendations of a working group on changes to the fee structure and subsidies for the education and leisure services department. \u00a0The increased sibling discount and the subsidy for leisure activities represent an important step in reducing costs for families with children in the municipality, in line with its family-friendly priorities. The increase in the sibling discount takes effect on 1 September, and the change to the leisure activity grants from 1 November.<\/p>\n
The proposals from the working group are steps towards significantly reducing the expenses of families with children. A decision has been made to increase the sibling discount from 30% to 50% for a second child and from 50% to 75% for a third child. The discount applies between service levels in accordance with current regulations. Upon reviewing the total expenses of families with children, the importance of supporting large families through an increase in the sibling discount became clear, in order to ensure all children have as equal access as possible to school and leisure activities. It has also been decided to increase the leisure allowance to kr. 3,000 per month for all age groups, from kr. 1,700 per month for 6-12 year olds and kr. 2,550 per month for 13-16 year olds. The age limit will also be raised by two years, from 6 to 18 years of age, instead of 16. The aim of the increase in the leisure allowance is to ensure equal access for all children and to increase their participation in organised sports and leisure activities. By raising the age limit to 18, we are actively working to prevent drop-out among this age group. The costs arising from the changes in the current financial year will be met by a supplementary budget, which will be presented later this month. The Education Committee welcomes the unanimous decision of the working group and that these changes to the fee structures have become a reality.<\/p>\n
It is important that we continue on this path and reduce expenditure further by reviewing nursery fees for pre-school children, income thresholds, increasing sibling discounts and leisure activity grants.\u00a0 In the preparation of the next budget, the intention is to ensure that the affairs of families with children are prioritised and that work continues to be carried out systematically towards a further reduction in service charges.<\/p>\n
