The school has now been working systematically for a year towards this recognition, in part due to its strong emphasis on environmental education, conservation, recycling and energy saving. At the presentation, Geir Bjarnason, Sports and
The youth representative of the City of Hafnarfjörður, recites the poem 'Stone. The summer of 2015 marks the first season that the Hafnarfjörður Work School is taking part in the Green Flag initiative. The Work School's group leaders began by putting together a special environmental group, with young people aged 15-18, who are responsible, among other things, for providing environmental education with the group leader. The environmental group acts as an environmental committee over the summer and meets regularly with the relevant parties, where success in sorting, education and conservation is discussed, among other things. The environmental group's decisions include working towards a „zero-waste“ policy and reducing waste. Since last summer, the environmental group has installed well-labelled recycling bins and a compost bin, removed all environmentally harmful materials from the school, and continues to share knowledge and education with other young people associated with the school and out into the wider community. Tools have been reused, all use of single-use plastic and cardboard has been stopped, and reusable items have been introduced instead. The environmental group ensured that set goals were met through regular monitoring, information and feedback, as well as by working according to an action plan.

The young teach the young

The Work Club does not operate like a traditional school but works with non-traditional methods such as the peer education model, which is essentially based on the principle that „young people teach young people“. The emphasis is on showing and introducing young people in Hafnarfjörður to how everything fits together in the „big picture“. Sustainability, democracy, pollution, food waste, fashion waste, the greenhouse effect and climate change are among the topics discussed within the group. Emphasis is placed on providing good, meaningful education to the young people in the environmental group so they can continue to educate other young people. The effectiveness of the teaching is then assessed through a survey. The group continued its work throughout last summer, educating family and friends, and presenting its work to residents, young people on ÍTH courses, the Hafnarfjörður town council, town employees and other parties. The group has also held a swap market, provided face painting for children with a „Mother Earth“ theme, and created a poster that refers to individual contribution and environmental awareness. In addition, the group took part in Landvernd's „Heart of the Land“ highland project, which involved, among other things, educating visitors and passers-by on Strandgatan in Hafnarfjörður. Following the work of the environmental group last summer, both an environmental charter and an environmental policy for the work-school have been produced. The charter was established at the outset to set the course, while the policy was developed steadily throughout the summer.

Environmental Charter of the Hafnarfjörður Summer School

The work school emphasises environmental education with the aim of staff realising the value of environmental protection and adopting a lifestyle in its spirit.

The work school emphasises recycling all materials that can be reused, such as paper, bottles, cans and more.

Work school emphasises saving energy

A work school emphasises using organic waste for soil.

The work experience programme emphasises being a role model in environmental protection.

An environmental council has been established by the work school, and it meets once a week.

The Work School's Environmental Policy

Work school aims to be a model in environmental matters

Work experience programme wants to make its staff think about environmental issues.

The work experience programme aims to create a positive discussion about environmental issues.

The work experience programme aims to introduce the Green Flag initiative and its importance to staff.

About the Green Flag

Eco-Schools is an international programme that aims to enhance environmental education and strengthen education for sustainability in schools. Schools go through seven steps towards increased environmental awareness and sustainability. When this goal is achieved, the schools are awarded the Green Flag for two years, and this recognition is renewed if the schools continue their good work. The Green Flag is a widely respected recognition across Europe as a symbol of successful education and environmental policy in schools. The seven steps are specific projects that raise awareness of environmental issues among pupils, teachers and other school staff. The activities are for both classroom teaching and for improving the daily running of the school. They lay the groundwork for adopting a responsible approach and implementing practical measures on environmental and sustainability issues within the school. Furthermore, experience shows that schools participating in the project can make considerable savings in their running costs. The Green Flag project in Iceland is managed by Landvernd, which is a member of the international organisation FEE. A steering group supports Landvernd in all matters relating to the project.

Vinnuskóli Hafnarfjarðar tók í dag í fyrsta sinn á móti Grænfánanum, umhverfisviðurkenningu frá Landvernd fyrir árangursríka fræðslu og umhverfisstefnu í skólum.
