{"id":13078,"date":"2016-07-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hafnarfjordur.is\/stutt-i-naesta-bekk\/"},"modified":"2022-10-25T08:59:33","modified_gmt":"2022-10-25T08:59:33","slug":"short-walk-to-the-next-bench","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hafnarfjordur.is\/en\/stutt-i-naesta-bekk\/","title":{"rendered":"Short walk to the next bench"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Br\u00fakum bekki is a community project that has been running since 2013 and has now reached the point where residents of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur and other visitors can walk through almost all of the town's neighbourhoods and rest on a bench at intervals of about 250\u2013300 metres. It is a joint project of the Eldrunarr\u00e1\u00f0, the F\u00e9lag eldri borgara \u00ed Hafnarfir\u00f0i, the F\u00e9lag sj\u00fakra\u00fej\u00e1lfara and the City of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At the spring meeting of the Eldri borgarar Council of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur on 5 May 2012, an agreement was signed for the community project, \u201eBr\u00fakum bekki\u201c, between the Council, FEBH, the Physiotherapists' Association and the Municipality of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur. Since then, 43 benches have been installed. The aim of the project is to promote increased physical activity among older people and enable them to go for walks in their local area. The project involves getting municipalities, businesses, associations, institutions and even individuals to support the project by sponsoring the creation of a bench or benches.\u00a0The benches are manufactured by M\u00e1lmsteypan Hella and are marked with the donors' names or the name of the person the donor wishes to dedicate the bench to. M\u00e1lmsteypan Hella also donates the eleventh bench.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Weary benches \u2013 a new map of walking routes<\/h4>\n<p>A new map of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, showing all walking routes with benches at 250 to 300-metre intervals, has now been published. A wall map can be found in all sports halls, swimming pools, at Hraunsel, 33 Hjallabraut, Hrafnista, H\u00f6fn and at the Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur service centre. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"internal\" href=\"https:\/\/hafnarfjordur.is\/en\/media\/kort\/BrukumBekki2016.pdf\/\">Use the benches \u2013 a new map of the walking trails can be found here<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>A partnership that has resulted in 43 benches<\/h4>\n<p>In the project's first year, businesses and organisations in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur were immediately approached about getting involved. In the first phase, which was implemented in 2013, a total of 30 benches were installed. The City of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur provided ten benches for the project, and M\u00e1lmsteypan Hella, the Hring women's association and the Trade Union provided two benches. \u00a0Actavis, Arion Bank, Atlantsol\u00eda, Hvalur, IKEA, Verkfr\u00e6\u00f0istofa VSB, Kiwaniskl\u00fabburinn Hraunborg, F\u00e9lag eldri borgara Hafnarfir\u00f0i, Starfsmannaf\u00e9lag Hafnarfjar\u00f0ar, Sj\u00fakra\u00fej\u00e1lfarinn, Bandalag kvenna Hafnarfir\u00f0i, The Lions Club of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur and the Rotary Club of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur each then donated a bench. In the second phase of the project, the design department of the Vocational School of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur was approached, now the Technical College, to assist in the design and construction of benches to be placed at the main natural gems and viewpoints in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, such as \u00c1stj\u00f6rn and Hvaleyrarvatn, and an approved design proposal is now on the table. \u00a0In the third phase, which began in 2015, the following companies, organisations and individuals joined as partners: Fjar\u00f0arkaup, \u00cdslandsbanki, the Freemasons' Lodges Hamar and Nj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, the Kiwanis Club Eldborg, Gu\u00f0laugur J\u00f3nasson, M\u00e1lmsteypan Hella, Valitor with 3 benches and the H\u00f6fn Care Centre with 2 benches. A total of 11 benches. This year, two benches have been added, one from the Port of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur and the other from the Lions Club Kald\u00e1, so in total, 43 benches have been installed by the project. These are purely in addition to the benches that the City of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur already had on the walking trails.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The project continues<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The project is ongoing, and anyone who wishes to get involved is encouraged to contact the project management directly.
