{"id":13145,"date":"2016-10-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hafnarfjordur.is\/miklar-framfarir-i-lestri\/"},"modified":"2022-10-25T08:59:43","modified_gmt":"2022-10-25T08:59:43","slug":"great-progress-in-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hafnarfjordur.is\/en\/miklar-framfarir-i-lestri\/","title":{"rendered":"Great progress in reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Significant progress in reading among primary school pupils in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>Results of measurements on<br \/>\nThe reading proficiency of pupils in years 5-10 in the primary schools of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur during the school year<br \/>\n2015-2016 show that the number of students with reading difficulties doubles and the number<br \/>\nthe number of pupils who need to improve their reading ability decreases significantly, by 50%. This<br \/>\nare results that are reflected in the reading ability assessments of around 2,200 pupils in<br \/>\nthe town's primary schools in the last school year.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Measurements of students' reading ability were made using reading tests.<br \/>\nwhich were presented to the students in question in September, January and May. There it is laid<br \/>\nfor the same reading test for the same students all three times \u2013 but not the same<br \/>\nThe tests for students are graded by year group, as they become more difficult as the students get older.<br \/>\nStudents' reading ability is divided into three tiers according to certain criteria which increase with<br \/>\nadvanced age. The lowest benchmark assumes that students have a need for greater<br \/>\nreading ability, the mid-point benchmark that students' reading ability is satisfactory and the highest<br \/>\nthe criterion that students have (very) good reading ability. The aforementioned reading ability concerns<br \/>\nmeasurements of students' reading speed, which provide a good prediction of their reading proficiency.<br \/>\nIn the September 2015 tests, 16% students with the highest reading ability, 22% students in<br \/>\na need for greater reading ability and 62% with adequate reading ability. In May,<br \/>\nThe group with the highest reading ability became 34%, the one in need of greater reading ability 12%<br \/>\nand the group with an adequate capacity of 54% students. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/hafnarfjordur.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Mynd1Nidurstodur.jpg\" alt=\"Figure 1 Results\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 750\/380;\"><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Reading is life<br \/>\ngame<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Measurements of students' reading ability mark monitoring and follow-up.<br \/>\nwith an increased emphasis on reading in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur. The project 'Reading is the Game of Life' was<br \/>\nlaunched in the primary schools of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur in the 2015-2016 school year with the aim of<br \/>\nthe aim of increasing students' reading proficiency, both reading speed and reading comprehension, which<br \/>\nreflects their reading ability at any given time. In nurseries and primary schools<br \/>\nthe town's is targeted teaching to enhance students' language use and literacy and<br \/>\nThe results from this first year show that significant progress has been made. They provide<br \/>\nas well as encouragement to continue on this path, as it is important that<br \/>\nSchools and homes work together for even better results. Learning to read is a continuous process.<br \/>\na project that never ends at any point.
