The first month of the new year is now over, and it's safe to say it has flown by, as there is a lot to get on with in a large household\u2014a household we all want to see grow and flourish, and one we will see grow and flourish in the coming months. 2016 was, in many ways, a remarkable year, and it has been quite a while since we have been able to sail into a new year with such positivity and optimism for better times. The 2017 budget bodes well for projects and initiatives that will undoubtedly improve the appearance of our town and the services for residents and businesses. These projects are already underway: groundwork has begun at the S\u00f3lvang nursing home, a tender for the new nursery and primary school in Skar\u00f0shl\u00ed\u00f0 is about to be launched, and planning for maintenance throughout the year is well advanced. A notice regarding the amended detailed plan for Skar\u00f0shl\u00ed\u00f0 is in the pipeline, and as soon as that process is complete, the sale of plots in this new, beautiful and sustainable neighbourhood can begin. Plans for urban densification are continuing, in consultation with the relevant parties. Meetings on planning matters have been well attended, most recently a meeting on planning ideas for Hraun\u00e1 Vestur, ideas which the detailed planning for the area will be based upon.<\/p>\n
At the end of the month, we held a seminar on special provisions in primary schools and the issues concerning pupils with special needs. It is clear that there are very divided opinions on the best way forward in this matter, and it is important to examine needs and opportunities more closely so that developments in school practice can meet increased demand, respond to calls for change, and have the intended impact. It is essential to better meet the needs of pupils, parents and teachers, and to ensure opportunities and possibilities for all. The relevant parties need to agree on the next steps in the development of the school's work. We want to increase opportunities and possibilities for everyone and need to find ways to do so. Our young people continue to excel in their studies and social activities, most recently at the youth parliament: New Year! New Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur! and in the Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur youth centre singing competition. Twelve acts took part in the singing competition and around 100 young people participated in the conference, which must be considered excellent participation.<\/p>\n
In conversations with residents, staff and company managers, I can sense that people are more relaxed now than they often have been, and I hope that increased cooperation and dialogue on projects and developments will yield results and bring us closer to the model society we all want to live in.<\/p>\n
Attached is an overview of some of the projects that have been in progress at the start of the year, and I aim to compile such an overview at the end of each month for all our information.<\/p>\n
