Gu\u00f0r\u00fan is a social worker by training and has worked as one for most of her career, with the exception of five years as a programme and news presenter at R\u00daV. Gu\u00f0r\u00fan has been the social services manager for Flj\u00f3tsdalsh\u00e9ra\u00f0 since mid-2010. She was the Executive Director of Child Protection in Reykjav\u00edk from 2000 to 2005, a project manager at the Ministry of Welfare from 2005 to 2006, and has also worked independently as a social worker and a guide.
