The group as a whole received an award for their performance, and the three top performers were also individually recognised. The Great Reading Competition has become an important part of the school and parent community across the country, but the festival originated in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur and is one of the longest-running reading projects in Iceland, having sprung from the initiative of enthusiasts for the promotion of the Icelandic language. .<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fourteen pupils from the Year 7 classes of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur's primary schools took part in this year's Great Reading Competition in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, reading a text by Andri Sn\u00e6r Magnason from <em>The Blue Planet<\/em>, a poem by Steinunn Sigur\u00f0ard\u00f3ttir and a poem of their own choice, but Andri and Steinunn were the poets of this year's competition. Andri Sn\u00e6r also gave a speech at the celebration in Hafnarborg. The students were presented with books, swimming passes, the \u00c1tthagaspili\u00f0 game about Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, and vouchers for a performance at the Gaflaraleikh\u00fasi\u00f0 theatre. Kristj\u00e1n \u00de\u00f3r J\u00fal\u00edusson, the Minister of Education and Culture, presented all the students with certificates for their outstanding performance. Three students were deemed the most successful in the reading competition by the judging panel: Erla R\u00far\u00ed Sigurj\u00f3nsd\u00f3ttir from \u00c1slandssk\u00f3li, Dagur Logi Sigur\u00f0sson from Hvaleyrarsk\u00f3li, and Sveinbj\u00f6rg J\u00fal\u00eda Kjartansd\u00f3ttir from Hraunvallask\u00f3li. Erla R\u00far\u00ed was the winner, Dagur Logi came in second place, and Sveinbj\u00f6rg J\u00fal\u00eda Kjartansd\u00f3ttir in third.\u00a0 This year's judging panel consisted of Anna \u00deorbj\u00f6rg Ing\u00f3lfsd\u00f3ttir, \u00c1sta Margr\u00e9t Eir\u00edksd\u00f3ttir, Hei\u00f0r\u00fan Kristj\u00e1nsd\u00f3ttir, \u00d3skar Gu\u00f0j\u00f3nsson and S\u00edmon J\u00f3n J\u00f3hannsson.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A festival of creativity and entertainment <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Awards were presented for the festival invitation poster and short stories in the short story competition for pupils in years 8-10 in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur's primary schools, which was launched on the Day of the Icelandic Language. Brynja Krist\u00edn Bertelsd\u00f3ttir of 6.SJ at Setbergssk\u00f3li received a prize for her drawing of the invitation. Four short stories were awarded prizes, which were presented by the First Lady, Mrs Eliza Reid. Two short stories came in third place. <em>A day in his life <\/em>by N\u00f3i Barkarson at V\u00ed\u00f0ista\u00f0ask\u00f3li <em>and This is the story of Nizar<\/em> by S\u00e6r\u00fanu Bj\u00f6rk J\u00f3nasd\u00f3ttir at Hraunvallask\u00f3li. In second place was the story <em>The Two Guitarists<\/em> by Val \u00c1ki Svansson at V\u00ed\u00f0ista\u00f0ask\u00f3li and in first place the story <em>Joe <\/em>by Krist\u00f3fer Baldur Sverrisson at V\u00ed\u00f0ista\u00f0ask\u00f3li. Students in the V\u00ed\u00f0ista\u00f0ask\u00f3li brass band added a festive touch to the gathering at Hafnarborg with a rousing fanfare at the start, young trombone players from T\u00f3nkv\u00edsl, the rhythm department of the Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Music School, performed both soulful and rock songs, and Year 4 pupils from Setbergssk\u00f3li had a talk choir.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A reading festival that has made its mark nationwide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first reading festival was held in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur on 4 March 1997, and for the past seventeen years, all Year 7 pupils nationwide have taken part in the competition. The aim from the outset has been to raise awareness and interest in schools in good reading and pronunciation, and to create an opportunity for teachers and parents to make a concerted effort on one aspect of the mother tongue: good reading and pronunciation.
