In recent years, school gardens have been run in five locations in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur for children aged 6-12. Vegetable plots have also been available in Vatnshl\u00ed\u00f0 for families. This year, there will be a change of arrangement: both the vegetable plots in Vatnshl\u00ed\u00f0 and the school gardens will be discontinued. Instead, the City of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur will be offering family gardens.<\/p>\n
Hildur \u00de\u00f3rarinsd\u00f3ttir oversees the gardens and says they will be open to all residents, regardless of age, and that this is a fantastic opportunity for families and others to grow their own vegetables and spend time together this summer. The family allotments will be available at two locations in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur: at the top of \u00d6ldugata and at V\u00ed\u00f0ista\u00f0ir. The cost for a garden is kr. 5,000, and tenants receive two plots. Included in the price are vegetables for one of the plots, fertiliser, weed membrane and pesticide for those who wish. Growers are responsible for providing their own vegetables or potatoes for the other plot. The vegetables included this year are cauliflower, swede, broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, kale, red kale, parsley, carrots, lettuce and mint. Tools and watering cans are provided.<\/p>\n
The allotments open on 1 June, but growers can be allocated plots at the end of May and start clearing them. However, the vegetables will not be ready until the beginning of June. The opening hours for the allotments will be as follows, subject to change: 1 June \u2013 30 June from 08:30 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:30; and 3 July \u2013 18 August from 10:00 to 15:00. Hildur says that during this time, staff from the family gardens will be on site, but it will also be fine to come after closing to do some gardening or watering. However, you would need to bring your own tools and a watering can from home.<\/p>\n
