At a meeting of the Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur town council last night, a resolution was passed in which the council strongly protests that the Reykjanesbraut appears nowhere in the finance minister's draft budget for 2018. There is a significant backlog of need for substantial improvements to the Reykjanesbraut within Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur. The massive increase in traffic on the Reykjanesbraut causes a high risk of accidents and long queues of cars form during peak hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201eIt is very urgent to increase road safety for motorists and find solutions to the traffic problems on the Reykjanesbraut within Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur. Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Town Council reiterates its appeal of 21 June to the constituency's Members of Parliament to ensure that funding is secured in the 2018 budget and in subsequent years to complete the works on the Reykjanesbraut within Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.\u201c The motion was passed unanimously at the meeting.<\/p>\n
The junctions and roundabouts on the section from Kaplakriki to L\u00e6kjargata have the highest accident rate in the capital region, and numerous serious accidents have also occurred on the straight stretch of the Reykjanesbraut from the cemetery south of Straumsv\u00edk. A demand is made on the authorities to ensure road safety on the Reykjanesbraut and for residents to be able to travel to and from their homes in a reasonable manner, without having to put their lives in grave danger on a daily basis.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It was also agreed at the meeting that a public meeting will be held to discuss transport issues, with a focus on the Reykjanesbraut. The Minister of Transport and Local Government, the Director of Road Administration or their representatives, Members of Parliament for the constituency, and others involved in the matter will be invited to the meeting.<\/p>\n
The aim of the meeting would be, among other things, to inform the public about the state of transport matters in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.\u00a0 Present the available traffic forecasts and the planning for the Reykjanesbraut, Kald\u00e1rselsvegur and Ofanbygg\u00f0avegur in the forthcoming master plan for Gar\u00f0ab\u00e6r. Outline discussions with the Road Administration regarding improvements to the Reykjanesbraut within Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur. To discuss improvements due to frequent accidents on the section from the cemetery to the dual\/quadruple carriageway section south of Straumsv\u00edk, and to obtain the government's plan for the continued development of transport infrastructure in and around Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.<\/p>\n
