Prevention Day 2017 is today, Wednesday, 4th October. The day is dedicated to some tips that can help prevent children and teenagers from using drugs, tips that are relevant to all families in the country.<\/p>\n
Prevention Day is held at the initiative of the President of Iceland in cooperation with the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities, the Icelandic Sports and Olympic Association, the Youth League of Iceland and other parties, and is supported by the pharmaceutical company Actavis.<\/p>\n
Icelandic research shows that teenagers who spend at least an hour a day with their families are less likely to start using drugs. Similarly, the findings show that young people who take part in sports and other organised youth activities are much less likely to fall victim to drugs. Thirdly, the research shows that the longer young people wait to start drinking alcohol, the less likely they are to use drugs later on.<\/p>\n
Today, Year 9 pupils in primary schools are taking part in a prevention project. They will have the opportunity to take part in a treasure hunt and will be introduced to the day and the project via a video.<\/p>\n
