The competition was now held for the 22nd time, but the competition in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur was the first to be held; now, sister competitions are held all over the country.\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3>First Lady Eliza Reid and Minister of Education Lilja Alfre\u00f0sd\u00f3ttir were among the guests, along with councillors, the Mayor of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, and the proud friends and relatives of the competitors. In second place was Krista S\u00f3l Gu\u00f0j\u00f3nsd\u00f3ttir from \u00c1slandssk\u00f3li, and third place was taken by \u00cdsabella Alexandra Speight from \u00d6ldut\u00fanssk\u00f3li.<\/h3>\n<p>Students read poems and stories of their own choice, but the poets for the competition this time are Sigr\u00fan Eldj\u00e1rn and \u00d3lafur J\u00f3hann Sigur\u00f0arson. The festival was hosted by Ingibj\u00f6rg Einarsd\u00f3ttir, former office manager at the Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur School Office, who has also overseen the project in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur since the first festival was held in the spring of 1997.<\/p>\n<p>The Great Reading Competition began as a development project in the primary schools of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur in 1996, the same year that Ingibj\u00f6rg also started working at the School Office. The competition was developed in collaboration with the primary schools of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur during the first academic year, but since then the number of municipalities taking part has increased. Now, in 2016, all primary schools in the country with Year 7 pupils take part in the competition.
