All nurseries in Hafnarfjörður have now received a comprehensive educational resource pack, which the National Centre for Education, in collaboration with the Lions Club, is providing to all nurseries in the country.

The pack contains letter tiles that can be used in a variety of ways, as well as posters with letters and numbers that can be displayed in the environment, movement games, musical games and easy-reader books. The distribution of the learning materials is part of the National Literacy Pact, and it is the hope of the National Education Agency that the materials will be well used to enhance language and literacy in the diverse work carried out in the country's nurseries. Representatives of the Lions Movement in Iceland took on the distribution of the learning materials and visited all playgroups with the gift. The three Lions Clubs in Hafnarfjörður handled the distribution to the local nurseries. Lions is the world's largest international service organisation, founded in the United States in 1917. Today, over 1.4 million Lions members work in 206 countries. Globally, the Lions movement is fighting illiteracy and promoting reading, and has been doing so successfully for the last 10 years. The aim of promoting literacy is for pupils to be able to read for knowledge and enjoyment by the end of their primary school education. Benchmarks for expected achievement are set, and emphasis is placed on providing all pupils with appropriate instruction. Staff in nurseries and primary schools select effective teaching methods that help to achieve the literacy objectives.

Fulltrúar í Lionsklúbbi Hafnarfjarðar afhentu á dögunum námsefnispakka til nemenda á Leikskólanum Víðivöllum.
