They have often met with little understanding in society and even prejudice. Questions about gender expression and gender identity have been pressing for their parents and other family members. The book The trans child based on the authors' many years of therapeutic work and interviews with trans children, children with non-typical gender expression, and their families. The book guides families and professionals through many of the fundamentals of the subject and on the journey that comes with having and raising a trans child or a child with non-conforming gender expression. It can be complex, sometimes difficult, but at the same time rewarding and educational. It tackles questions such as what gender identity is, what it's like to come out, what gender reassignment is, and, not least, how to deal with it all.

The book is the first of its kind to be published in Icelandic. It was translated by teacher Trausti Steinsson, but a review group from the gender studies programme at the University of Iceland adapted and localised it for Icelandic circumstances.

Hagsmunasamtök foreldra og aðstandenda trans barna og ungmenna á Íslandi – Trans vinir var stofnað í vetur.
