The City of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur encourages residents and businesses in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur to actively participate in Plastic-Free September, an awareness campaign designed to make people think about the excess and harmful effects of plastic on the environment. While also pointing out ways to reduce the use of single-use plastic.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From 1 March 2018, residents of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur have been able to put all plastic together in a sealed plastic bag directly into the household's grey bin (energy bin). The plastic bags are then sorted separately from other rubbish at the sorting facility and sent for recycling. No special bags are needed for the plastic; just standard plastic bags, but care must be taken to keep the plastic separate from other rubbish in sealed bags so that Sorpa's equipment can sort it efficiently. <\/p>\n

Why should we give up plastic?<\/h4>\n

Plastic lasts for thousands of years and is therefore a very poor choice for single-use. Plastic takes a very long time to break down, and when it does, it turns into microplastics which are no better for the environment. Plastic can only be recycled into other, lower-quality plastic. All the plastic we use that isn't recycled accumulates in landfill sites or in the natural environment, causing damage for the foreseeable future. Plastic ends up in the natural environment far too often, particularly in rivers, lakes and the sea. Plastic attracts various pollutants, and when it ends up in the tissues of living organisms, these substances can then find their way into our food. Soft plastics sometimes contain hormone-disrupting substances (e.g. phthalates), which are harmful to humans.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
