The Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Music School (TH) was founded in 1950 and
\nbegan its operations with 16 students, most of whom were studying piano. Initially
\nthe school's premises were widely located throughout the town, until the City of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur became the first
\nthe municipality to build a music school from scratch, on Strandgata, in the year
\n1997. The housing is already bursting at the seams, however, but the opportunities are many and
\nLots to look forward to in our anniversary year. The local newspaper Hafnfir\u00f0ingur spoke with Eir\u00edkur Stephensen, the headmaster.<\/a> <\/p>\n

Eir\u00edkur began working as headmaster of TH in October 2018, after
\n21 years as head teacher of the Eyjafj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Music School. Eir\u00edkur is also the other
\nof the duo Hundur \u00ed \u00f3skilum and one of the two composers of the music in
\nthe musical Gosa at the City Theatre. Eir\u00edkur tells the story of the time since he began
\nWork at TH has involved getting to grips with the school, where the shoe pinches and what
\nthe possibilities the school has, but they are very great. \u201eI feel very comfortable here and me
\nhas been very well received by staff, parents and the administration. I
\nI have invested in a house in town and the family is moving here this spring. I
\nI feel I've got a completely different job to the one up north, because the schools are very
\ndifferent.\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Music<\/em><\/p>\n

Friendship between music schools <\/h4>\n

Among the changes that have taken place in recent winters is that
\nIn the second year of the preparatory school, the traditional recorder course was changed to learning the
\nplaying a wind instrument in small groups. \u201eWe are in a very friendly relationship with
\nThe Gar\u00f0ab\u00e6r Music School and this winter we hired Inga Bj\u00f6rk Ingad\u00f3ttir
\na music therapist part-time as a consultant and in teaching. We would like to be able to
\nwelcoming students with special needs, but the school has taken great pride in
\nsuch a thing\u201c<\/em> says Eir\u00edkur. The winter has also been spent on a change to
\na music theory course, which will probably start next autumn. It is a pilot project.

\nwith baby classes for 3-12 months.\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n

Professionalism and patience characterise the teaching methods.<\/h4>\n

The TH's premises have become too small for all its activities and says
\nErik that an attempt is being made to increase cooperation with primary schools, e.g. by
\noffer instrumental music lessons in schools during school hours and thus ease the pressure on the system.
\nthe premises on Strandgata. \u201eI come from such a system in a previous job. In some places
\nis this possible here in town and the schools are willing to look into it. We are
\nto get a great facility at Skar\u00f0shl\u00ed\u00f0arsk\u00f3li, we also have the rhythmic department at
\nthe old L\u00e6kjarsk\u00f3li and would like to get it over here. We are looking at all
\npossibilities for how we can expand the school.\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n

Many former students doing good things<\/h4>\n

The highlight of the music school's anniversary year will be the anniversary itself.
\nthe anniversary celebration in the Sports Hall on Strandgata in November, but Eir\u00edkur says that
\nall events throughout the year will be more or less dedicated to the anniversary. \u201eWe are
\nto shape this gradually and we would like to have, for example, a brass band day, because that
\nThe 60th anniversary of the TH Band was forgotten two years ago. Band
\nHafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur is also staffed, more or less, by students and teachers from us. So
\nWe are, of course, extremely proud of the successful composer Hildur Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir. \u201eParents
\nhers, Ingveldur \u00d3lafsd\u00f3ttir and Gu\u00f0ni Franzson, were my classmates in
\nmusic for a long time and I last saw Hildur when she was one year old. I have to
\nof course, she has been monitored since then. Although Hildur is the most famous student at the school in
\nThere is a long list of former students here who are doing good things.
\nThe school is also known for its excellent teaching staff and there is a great atmosphere here.
