Every day, a huge amount of rubbish enters the town's sewer system, causing blockages and often significant damage. A great deal of work and expense is involved in cleaning and clearing these blockages, and in replacing or repairing pumps that stop under the strain and, in some cases, fail. If all residents and staff of institutions and businesses in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur join forces, it would be possible to reduce the amount of unwanted items\/substances entering the sewer system and even prevent it entirely in the long term. A considerable sum would be saved with the co-ordinated effort of all parties involved, a sum that could then be better spent on the construction, improvement and development of equipment, tools and pipes.<\/p>\n

Providers<\/a> have published some useful advice about what belongs in the toilet bowl and what doesn't. Wet wipes, nappies, sanitary towels, cotton buds, condoms, dental floss, tampons, flannel squares, grease and oils are among the items that do not belong in the toilet. It is reported that, for comparison, Icelanders flush four times more of such items down the toilet than Swedes.<\/p>\n

Wet wipes are a necessity and useful for many things, but they must be disposed of correctly after use. Wet wipes are one of the main problems for the sewer system today. They do not dissolve well and can cause significant damage if they are flushed down the toilet. Pipes can become blocked in homes, leading to water damage and repair costs. Some manufacturers state on their packaging that the wet wipes are safe to dispose of in the toilet, which is absolutely not correct. Wet wipes should never be flushed down the toilet, and this, of course, applies to other sanitary products as well.<\/p>\n

To the rubbish with all this <\/strong>\u2013 it is difficult and costly to deal with the consequences if these undesirable items end up in the toilet.<\/p>\n
