Health Minister Svand\u00eds Svavarsd\u00f3ttir has decided to extend the restrictions on gatherings and school activities, which were due to expire on 13 April, until 4 May. The decision is in line with the recommendation of the Director of Public Health. Although the spread of infections has been successfully kept in check, there are concerns about the rapid increase in the number of seriously ill individuals requiring intensive care.\u201eIt is now crucial that we continue to stand together, follow the instructions of our best professionals, and thus prevent the strain on the healthcare system from exceeding its capacity.<\/em>\u201csays the Health Minister.<\/p>\n

As set out in the attached memorandum from the Director of Public Health to the Minister of Health, various measures, including the aforementioned restrictions, have succeeded in curbing the spread of COVID-19 in the community. To date, the increase in infections has not been greater than is consistent with the most optimistic of the forecasts in this regard, according to a prediction model by relevant experts, as can be seen on the website Covid.hi.is. However, the number of seriously ill individuals has increased steadily, which is reflected, for example, in the high pressure on the intensive care unit at Landsp\u00edtalinn. It is clear that a further increase in community transmission, leading to a rise in the number of seriously ill patients, could create a major problem for the healthcare system and make it difficult for it to fulfil its role as required.<\/p>\n

Restrictions to be lifted in phases<\/h4>\n

There will be no changes to the current restrictions on gatherings and school operations, other than an extension of their validity until 4 May. During this period, a plan will be prepared on how best to lift the current restrictions in phases. The plans are expected to be presented by the end of this month.<\/p>\n

Granted exemptions remain valid<\/h4>\n

Exemptions granted from the restrictions on gatherings and school activities will remain valid for the duration of the extension of the measures, i.e. until the 4th of May.
