An agreement for the new premises was signed in February 2018 and the first sod was cut in March of the same year. This past weekend, the premises at Fornub\u00fa\u00f0ir 5 was formally opened with a symbolic ceremony, attended by the President of Iceland, the Minister of Fisheries, the Director-General, director, staff of the institution and other guests bid farewell to Hafr\u00f3's former home at Sk\u00falagata 4 and sailed on the research vessels, \u00c1rni Fri\u00f0riksson and Bjarni S\u00e6mundsson, from Faxagar\u00f0ur to their new home port in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/hafnarfjordur.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image00021-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Image 00021\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 2048px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 2048\/1536;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>The sun welcomed the group in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur town council, house builders, a group of locals and other guests gave a cheerful welcome to the two research ships and their guests on the afternoon last Friday. The President of Iceland, Gu\u00f0ni Th. J\u00f3hannesson, cut the ribbon as the ships arrived at the quay at Fornub\u00fa\u00f0ir 5. She presented him with flowers and a gift from the town.&nbsp;<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>With Hafr\u00f3's move to Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, all of the institution's operations are now under one roof in new, environmentally friendly premises at a new location, opening up great potential and opportunities for further growth and development. Ideas have already been put forward to establish a knowledge centre for the sea and the polar regions, and start-up and knowledge-based companies in the fisheries sector have expressed a keen interest in being based alongside the institute with collaboration in mind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An opportunity in keeping with the times<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Significant and positive development is anticipated for the Flensburg Harbour and \u00d8-S\u00e6ra area, as shown by the master plan and the strategic vision it provides for the overall appearance of the harbour area. In recent months and years, interest in various activities and services in the area has grown significantly, and entrepreneurs, artists and designers have set up workshops and facilities both at Fornub\u00fa\u00f0ir and in the creative environment of the Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Icehouse.
