Back to
\nschool autumn 2020 \u2013 Primary schools<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pupils
\nofficially go back to primary schools in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur on 25 August. Some
\n4,300 children from Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur are going back to school this autumn. Around
\n4,000 of these will be attending primary schools in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, with around
\n400 starting in Grade 1. There are eleven primary schools operating in
\nHafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, nine run by the municipal authorities, plus two independent
\nschools: Barnask\u00f3li Hjallastefnunnar and N\u00da \u2013 Frams\u00fdn Menntun. <\/p>\n

Autumn 2020
\nalso sees the return of Engidalssk\u00f3li as an independent primary school, after
\nhaving been closed for 10 years. Engidalssk\u00f3li will received pupils in
\nGrades 1-6 this autumn, adding Grade 7 in autumn 2021. The new
\nHead Teacher of Engidalssk\u00f3li is Margr\u00e9t Halld\u00f3rsd\u00f3ttir.<\/p>\n

Back to
\nschool as normal <\/strong><\/p>\n

As you will
\nhave seen in the media, the government has decided that primary schools should
\noperate as normal this autumn. This means that all pupils can expect their
\nusual class timetable. However, schools will also be focusing more on infection
\nprevention measures and cleaning. Greater emphasis will be placed on hygiene
\namong pupils, such as more frequent hand-washing and disinfecting, particularly
\nat mealtimes. It has also been decided to keep parental visits to schools to a
\nminimum. We ask parents to come to the school only if the matter is urgent.
\nParents will receive further information from schools soon.<\/p>\n

After-school
\ncentres also operating normally<\/strong><\/p>\n

After-school
\ncentres will also be operating normally. They open on
\nWednesday 26 August for pupils in Grades 1-4. Pupils in
\nGrade 1 are already attending a special summer course in each primary
\nschool. This course began early this month and will continue until schools open
\n(24 August). Further back-to-school information can be found on the
\nschools’ websites. Here you can also find useful information on each school’s
\noperations and priorities.<\/p>\n

Food in
\nschool time and free study materials <\/strong><\/p>\n

All pupils
\nin primary schools in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur are offered porridge before classes begin.
\nThis is free of charge to parents and guardians. All primary-school pupils may
\nalso register to get fruit in the course of each morning. To register for fruit
\nand lunch, please use the Sk\u00f3lamatur website: https:\/\/askrift.skolamatur.is\/.
\nThis does not apply to pupils at \u00c1slandssk\u00f3li, which has its own kitchen and
\noffers the same service for all pupils at the school. Pupils at \u00c1slandssk\u00f3li
\nmust submit a special meal order form. Schools will provide parents with
\ninformation on ordering meals when the school year begins. Meal services at
\nprimary schools will begin on 26 August.<\/p>\n

The
\nHafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur municipal authorities provide pupils with study materials free of
\ncharge and handle purchasing of stationery required for schoolwork. This means
\nthat, in addition to textbooks, students receive notebooks, stationery,
\nfolders, etc. as and when they need them for their schoolwork. School bags,
\nsports kits and stationery required for homework are to be purchased by
\nparents. <\/p>\n

Successful
\nand positive co-operation between homes and schools is key <\/strong><\/p>\n

\nmany things to think about when it comes to our primary schools. Usually the
\nschool in question will provide information on their day-to-day operations and
\nthe Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur municipal website also contains information on primary

\noff to a good start and positive connections, dialogue and co-operation between
\nhomes and schools is key to achieving this. Good study conditions and welfare
