Preliminary work for the North Shore development begins<\/h4>\n

On Meeting of the Port Authority on 12 August.<\/a> It was agreed to put the work out to tender. \u201eNorth Bank \u2013 stone defence\u201c <\/strong><\/em>and the project is a precursor to further development and final works on Strandst\u00edgurinn and the recreational areas on the North Shore and at Nor\u00f0urgar\u00f0ur. The architectural firm Landslag and the engineering service Strendingur have worked on the project's preparation and design in collaboration with the Port of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur and the Department of Environment and Planning of the City of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.  The tender for the first phase of the project is now open.<\/a> <\/p>\n

The design of the area aims to preserve its raw and charming character. <\/sup><\/p>\n

It has been approved to proceed with the design and surfacing of the North Shore in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, with the aim of better connecting it to the town centre and making the North Shore area as a whole even more attractive for residents and visitors. The rock groyne provides the possibility of installing a floating pier in the area in the future. The easternmost part of the North Shore will not be rock-groined, but it is very popular for activities such as rod fishing.<\/p>\n

Four-part performance<\/h4>\n

The works for the final finishing of the North Quay area can be divided into four phases, and the overall project involves preparatory and finishing works from an environmental and safety perspective before the final surfacing takes place. In the first phase, during autumn and winter 2020\/2021, a stone veneer will be applied to the front of the steel decking at the North Quay, and these works are expected to be completed in early 2021. The second phase will take place in the summer of 2021, when stone armour will be added to the outside of the North Quay. Phase three will then involve the reconstruction and raising of the North Quay, but the final completion date for these works is not yet certain. Following the rock armour on the North Shore, the first phase of the bank's surface dressing will begin, with the aim of creating a diverse and attractive outdoor recreational area as part of the Strandst\u00edgur \u2013 stretching from Langeyrarmelar to the small boat harbour.<\/p>\n

    Intervention in the area with incidental disruption and pressure on residents<\/h4>\n

    The project will naturally involve some disruption in the Nordurbakkas area, which residents will notice. As the work is in a densely populated residential area and access to the site is restricted, the emphasis will be on transporting as much material as possible to the worksite by sea, using a dredger or barge, to minimise disruption and ensure the safety of those on the construction site. Access to the site will be from the sea, and, when unavoidable, from the road alongside North Shore 13. For example, stonework will therefore have to be carried out from the shore. Great emphasis will be placed on ensuring that all handling and maintenance of the site is carried out to a high standard.
