The Technical College and Flensborg School in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur today received the 2020 Gullepli\u00f0 awards for outstanding health promotion work in secondary schools. The Technical College received the Gullepli\u00f0 itself, while Flensborg School received an honourable mention for having worked diligently on health promotion within the school for the past ten years. R\u00f3sa Gu\u00f0bjartsd\u00f3ttir, the Mayor of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, attended the awards ceremony and in her speech spoke, among other things, about the importance of prevention and, not least, the importance of providing good support for the young people in the community.<\/p>\n

The Golden Apple 2020 \u2013 award for outstanding health promotion work in secondary schools<\/h4>\n

The Technical College receives the 2020 Golden Apple and Flensborg an honourable mention<\/em><\/p>\n

The 2020 Golden Apple of the Office of the Chief Medical Officer was presented for the 10th time at a ceremony held at the Technical College in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur today. Lilja D. Alfre\u00f0sd\u00f3ttir, Minister of Education and Culture, presented the award, which the Technical College received on this occasion. The judging panel was of the unanimous opinion that the Technical College stood out from its peers with its new focus on school community, i.e. the relationships between students and other students and the college's staff. This year, a special Gulleplis award was also presented, and it was Flensborg School that received this recognition for the holistic implementation of health promotion and its commendable performance over the past 10 years. <\/p>\n

The award is given to the school that excels in a pre-determined aspect of school life, which this year was school relationships. The Headteacher of the Technical School, Hildur Ingvarsd\u00f3ttir, spoke about the school's measures to foster positive school relationships, citing, among other things, the school's work with groups considered to be in challenging circumstances and approaches that reach everyone, regardless of age or location. The school's management has emphasised strengthening student engagement through targeted and engaging approaches in recent terms. The Technical College is the largest further education college in the country, with nearly 2,500 students, and operates from 8 different campuses.<\/p>\n

Honour Award for Health Promotion<\/h4>\n

Honourable mentions for outstanding health promotion work in a secondary school were also awarded at the same ceremony. Flensborgarsk\u00f3linn in Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur received the award, as the school has worked diligently on health promotion for the past 10 years and has never let the side down. With its focus on health promotion, a health-promoting culture has been created in the school, which is reflected, among other things, in an increased range of courses related to health and well-being and in good pastoral care for students. The headteacher and a student from Flensborg School then spoke about a new and interesting development project within the school, H\u00e1mark, where students receive support and education to maximise their health and well-being.<\/p>\n

The importance of school connections and mental well-being in schools<\/h4>\n

Alma D. M\u00f6ller, the Chief Medical Officer, gave a speech at the start of the ceremony in which she discussed the importance of school connections and referred to the government's action plan for mental health in schools. The focus of Gulleplisen 2021 was also announced, which will be on how secondary schools support students' social and emotional skills.<\/p>\n
