Museums and swimming pools in Hafnarfjörður, like those in the entire capital region, are closed and are therefore not offering their usual varied programme, but instead are suggesting fun ideas for enjoying the great outdoors during the winter break.

Let's explore our local area.

At a press briefing on Monday by the Civil Protection Department of the National Police Commissioner and the Chief Medical Officer, the public were advised to stay at home as much as possible, not to travel unnecessarily, and to avoid gatherings both at home and away, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The health town of Hafnarfjörður has compiled A whole alphabet of ideas for lots of exciting and fun things. that people can take up at home or in their local area during lockdown and quarantine. The ideas are intended as a guide to a variety of projects, but the main thing is to find something new and different to do, alone or with your family.

Here you can access A whole alphabet of ideas to make at home or in the immediate vicinity

Hafnarfjörður is like a fairy tale, with great opportunities for outdoor activities and health and wellbeing.

Hafnarfjörður is a beautiful town, naturally. The town is built in a horseshoe shape at the head of the fjord, but the Hamarskotslækur stream runs through it to the sea. The landscape around Hafnarfjörður is shaped by the area's location on the edge of the active volcanic belt that runs through the Reykjanes Peninsula and extends north to the Langjökull glacier. Characteristic of the area are the rugged, jagged lava fields that have flowed to the sea and form the bedrock beneath a large part of the town, which is its main feature. Standing out from the lava fields are isolated hills which are prominent landmarks, including Helgafell, Valahnjúkar and Ásfjall, the latter of which is the closest to the settlement.

The landscape is diverse and in it are found distinctive features. Natural phenomena and interesting places

Number Walking and cycling route lie around Hafnarfjörður

Outdoor recreational areas are varied in type, so that everyone can find a setting for outdoor activities to suit them, e.g. play and football pitch . A six-hole disc golf course is located in Víðistaðatún. Disc golf is played in a similar way to regular golf, except that instead of golf clubs and a golf ball, disc golf discs are used, and instead of golf holes, specially equipped baskets are set up. The sport is suitable for all ages and is fun for the whole family. The course is free to use and no advance booking is necessary. An information board with the rules of the game and the course layout can be found on the lawn below Víðistaðakirkja.
