The proportion of the population that needs to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity depends on how contagious the virus is. New viral strains that have emerged recently are considered more contagious than previous strains but are not dominant in the pandemic. Therefore, there is some uncertainty in the calculations of the percentage required to achieve herd immunity, but it is likely to be in the range of 60-80%.<\/p>\n
