Kindergarten \u00c1lfasteinn<\/a> is celebrating its 20th anniversary today. To mark the occasion, a variety of activities were set up for all pupils, and an indoor celebration was held with the school staff. The Mayor and the Director of Education, along with a small delegation, were invited for a visit and were introduced to the school's methodology and its diverse and creative work.  <\/p>\n

The \u00c1lfasteinn nursery school is remarkable for many reasons, not least for its work and its location.

\nJohn Dewey's progressive education, which emphasises creative thinking
\nand that solutions are sought for the challenges that children face in play and in their daily lives. In \u00c1lfasteinn, play, the child's imagination
\nand a strong block work has been the way to these priorities. The nursery school has been a leader in block work and that is not

\nhas been at the helm from the outset. Emphasis is placed on free play during outdoor learning and play areas where children can choose zones according to their interests and change their minds and move between areas.\u00a0 The inquiry approach has been used in the school for years, but there the children themselves decide which topics to cover and vote democratically on what will be addressed. They then research and explore their chosen topic in a variety of ways, for example: aeroplanes, swimming pools, the rescue service, snow, and the list goes on. <\/p>\n

\u00c1lfasteinn consists of a dynamic team of staff who have
\ntackles challenges with courage and determination, and all school activities bear witness to a strong group of individuals who are constantly seeking new approaches to school life.
\nand is therefore consistent with the words that guide the school's professional work: \u201eThe teacher's role is not to answer questions but to
\nto help generate new questions\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n

At \u00c1lfasteinn, we use a structured settling-in approach. This is based on the child learning to be in a new place and in new circumstances. The settling-in is based on the parents' full participation in the nursery's activities on the days it takes place. With this participatory approach, parents have the opportunity to pass on their own feelings of security, curiosity and excitement about this new situation to their children. Parents who participate gain confidence and are able to observe what happens in the nursery and see the staff at work. They get to know the nursery staff, the other children, their parents, and the general running of the nursery.
