Work has begun installing a sub-base for the old steel sheet at the North Shore. In accordance with the recently approved plan for the North Shore area, a rock armour will be installed in front of the bank, followed by the final surfacing with footpaths, lighting and planting later this summer.<\/p>\n

The older steel wall on the North Shore to the east is now over 60 years old and is beginning to show some wear and tear. With a rock fill in front of the quay, the area will be in keeping with the shoreline at the head of the fjord, but the plan allows for the installation of floating pontoons extending from the quay. Wooden decking will also be built out to the rock wall, and the westernmost part of the steel jetty will be retained, where facilities will be provided for those wishing to fish in the old north harbour.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Surface work will likely begin in June.<\/h4>\n

Hafnarfjar\u00f0arh\u00f6fn is responsible for the works on the infill, and this will be followed by the renovation of the North Pier, with a stone breakwater on the seaward side and the reconstruction and raising of the pier, which will be used as a recreational area. The contractor Hagtak is handling the infill and rock armour, and most of the material will be transported by barge along the waterway from \u00d3seyrarbryggja to the North Quay to ensure minimal disruption to the residential area on the waterfront. The works are scheduled for completion at the end of May, with surface works beginning in June.<\/p>\n
