In the project, students worked together in groups to create a new home for humanity, after the inhabitants of Earth had been forced to flee the planet due to climate change. The aim of the project was for the students to find ways to preserve the resources of the new planet for future generations.\u00a0 \u00d6ldut\u00fanssk\u00f3li was one of three schools to receive the award.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The selection panel states in its decision that the project is well-suited to opening the eyes of students and others to the challenges that climate change entails, and to encouraging further discussion and solution-oriented approaches to tackling the challenges of the future.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/hafnarfjordur.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/hopurinnoldutunsskoliumhverfismal2021.jpg\" alt=\"The Group Oldutunsskoli Environmental Matters 2021\" href=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1602px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1602\/1068;\"><sup>Junior secondary school pupils at \u00d6ldut\u00fanssk\u00f3li.<\/sup><\/p>\n<h4>About the project: A new community&nbsp;<\/h4>\n<p>The project submitted by the students in the junior secondary school was a themed project they worked on before Christmas. The project was about a group of 100 people leaving Earth because it is becoming uninhabitable due to climate change. The 100 individuals were heading for a new planet, similar to Earth, but one that was untouched by human influence. The students chose the group and created a new society. They had to draw on humanity's experience and use that knowledge to create the new society. Initially, the students watched a United Nations film, <em>Before the Flood<\/em>, which is about global warming. The film is very powerful and it taught students that it is not just the use of vehicles that causes climate change, but also t.d. man-made deforestation, that red meat is a major contributor to pollution, and they saw in black and white how badly we are treating the Earth. It was quite a challenge for our young people to plan a new world that wouldn't fall into the same old ways as the one they were leaving behind.
