The exhibition concept focuses on the coastline, which is at once majestic and teeming with tiny creatures, delicate vegetation and a variety of rock types. Over the centuries, coastal dwellers have largely based their livelihood on their proximity to the sea, but the coast both defines the world's boundaries for the inhabitants and serves as their connection to other worlds. The role of the coastline in this context can therefore shed light on various attitudes towards the environment, responsibility, and the human condition in nature throughout human history.

In an age of climate change, the coastline can be seen as a kind of battleground. Rising sea levels have a direct impact on the coastline – coastal species will disappear and others will emerge with rising temperatures, and it may become necessary to consider coastal development and settlement on new grounds. The exhibition will then highlight how fragile and precious our coexistence with nature is, in the hope of moving the audience and prompting visitors to rethink their attitude towards the coastline in a new way and within a new context.

The list of participants in the exhibition will be published later.

Sigrún Alba Sigurðardóttir is an independent curator; she has organised exhibitions at the National Gallery of Iceland, the Árnessýsla Art Museum, the Reykjavík Photomuseum and the National Museum of Iceland.
