The festival has coincided with the first day of summer in recent years but, as in the last two years, will run for longer and serve as the centrepiece of a diverse range of cultural events throughout the summer.

A special emphasis is placed on the participation of children and young people, as the First of May is part of the celebrations. Various music events feature prominently in this year's Bjartra Dagar programme, with the HEIMA music festival leading the way, and on Friday evening, museums, shops and artists' studios will be open late. Musicians, sports clubs and various voluntary organisations are also hosting a wide range of events, and the town's cultural institutions are offering an entertaining programme.

Summer takes over from winter on Bright Days

The festival begins on the last day of winter with a summer concert by students, the selection of Hafnarfjörður's town artist, the awarding of cultural grants, and the HEIMA music festival, a unique event held in private homes in the town centre of Hafnarfjörður. On the first of May, there will be, among other things, birdwatching at Hvaleyrarvatn, a cross-country run in the centre of Hafnarfjörður, and a Scout programme at Thorsplan.

Find the programme for the Bright Days 2022 here:

Bright days Wednesday 20th April – the last day of winter

Bright days Thursday 21 April – First of May

Bright days Friday 22 April

Bright days Saturday 23 April

Bright days Sunday 24 April

Event and cultural grants in the wake of Covid-19

In a normal year, this country's first town festival lasts for five days, but it has been decided that the festival will run for the whole summer, and the town council has announced Special event and cultural grants in the wake of Covid-19 available for application.
