Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur celebrates its 114th anniversary today, Wednesday, 1 June 2022, as the municipality was granted borough status on 1 June 1908. A year later, on 1 June 1909, the town had a population of 1,469, with 109 children enrolled in its primary school. Today, the population of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur is 30,028, and there are over 6,000 pupils in the municipality's nursery and primary schools.\u00a0 A flagpole has been erected in Hellisger\u00f0i, our Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur citizens' public park. <\/p>\n
This year's anniversary falls on a beautiful Wednesday. We encourage residents of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur and friends of the town to enjoy all or some of what Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur has to offer today, as well as on most other days: the great outdoors, exercise, culture, shopping and dining. <\/p>\n
Summer opening begins at all museums of the Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Museum of Local History.<\/a> From today, and at 5 p.m. today, a new themed exhibition formally opens in the Packhouse of the Folk Museum. The exhibition is entitled \u201eMrs Thorbjorg Bergmann. The first Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur collector.\u201c <\/a> The exhibition tells the story of the life of \u00deorbj\u00f6rg Sigur\u00f0ard\u00f3ttir Bergmann, who began collecting folk artefacts at a young age with the aim of preserving the cultural heritage. Light refreshments will be served and everyone is welcome! <\/p>\n This summer, guided town walks are offered every Wednesday.<\/a> <\/strong> The first walk is this evening at 8 p.m. The walks are a collaboration between the Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Library, the Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Folk Museum, Hafnarborg and the Healthy Town of Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur. This evening, J\u00f3natan Gar\u00f0arsson will lead a search for the first and third house of Hreinn Fri\u00f0finnsson, the walk House in the lava field<\/strong><\/a>. The walk takes two hours and will start from Ger\u00f0i\u00f0, to the east of the Aluminium Smelter in Straumsv\u00edk. Participation is free and everyone is welcome.<\/p>\n Summer reading Hafnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Library <\/a>starts as usual on 1 June and runs until 3 September, when it will be celebrated in style with a harvest festival! As before, you will be able to sign up for the summer reading programme both at the library itself and electronic<\/a>, The 'Reader of the Week' will be drawn throughout the term, and materials sent to all primary schools to encourage participation.
