Earths and heavens burst the scale of joy

10,000 people visited the 'Heima and the Heavens' festival, held at the Hafnarfjörður Library last weekend. The festival was a grand affair.

„Everything exceeded our wildest expectations. Everyone is excited to repeat the event next year,“ says Unnur Helga Möller, event manager at Hafnarfjörður Library and festival director.

A spaceship could be seen from Star Wars, R2-D2-the robot from the same film, the DeLorean time-travel car as in Back to the Future...the famous films and a whole host of lorries, as well as others in costume, at this unique gaming and costume convention.

„Many came back again and again all weekend. The house was packed out the whole time and it was absolutely brilliant. The weather was lovely and there was lots of fun on the square in front of the museum,“ says Unnur.

But what stood out? „How happy everyone was,“ Unnur replies immediately. „The atmosphere and the love that was created, the joy that was tangible. She is precisely the reason we do this. We put our heart and soul into this festival.“ Everyone involved with the festival has worked hard to see this dream of a magnificent costume and role-playing festival in the country become a reality for the second time at the library.

„Yes, we put blood, sweat and tears into the festival. Mostly sweat, a little blood but very few tears,“ she says, laughing as she thanks everyone who contributed. „We're already being asked what we're going to do next year. Wow, we're aiming higher,“ she says, setting the bar high, as the festival was particularly splendid with a host of costume designers and playhouses.

„There are more worlds to explore. So we have a whole spaceship in the music department,“ says Unnur. This Star Wars spaceship was requested at a foreign festival.

„We all worked on this together. Different worlds worked together. No one can do a project like this unless everyone works together. This is incredibly significant, as everyone decided to come and share their joy. By sharing what makes them happy; which is larp, the Star Wars universe, lightsabers, K-Pop, making costumes, and that we can all be whoever we want to be and give back in the process.“

Rec Media captured the joy all weekend and took photos. Let's enjoy the results together.
