300 children on the sailing course this summer

News

Nearly 300 children took part in the summer courses at the Þyt sailing club. Never before have so many taken part. We can all get involved in sailing at open days running until October.

Sailing in the Flensburg Harbour

Nearly 300 children took part in the sailing club Þyt's summer courses. Never before have so many taken part.

„The Spanish coaches, Laura and her husband Marti, came last year. Then we had 13 children in the morning and 13 in the afternoon. But this summer we were able to double the number of participants and had 26 in the morning and 26 in the afternoon,“ says Helga Veronica Foldar, the club's chairperson.

The children come from all over

„We had a bit of everything this summer. Sailing is popular and great fun. The sailing club is well-established here in the harbour, so the activity is well-known. Parents drove their children here from as far afield as Breiðholti,“ says Helga.

Children aged 10-16 attended the courses. The first was on 10th June. The last was at the end of July. „We invite all Year 6 pupils to come for half a day in May. Many of them then come to the summer courses. One girl came to the course for three weeks this summer. Yes, it's true that the same kids attend the courses. A lot of these kids have come back to training during the winter,“ says Helga.

Open house twice a week

Helga says the winter programme is now getting under way. „We have open houses on Thursdays and Saturdays. Then we have training sessions and activities for adults. The first step is to come and have a go, and then decide what to do next. It doesn't cost anything. Most people then sign up and pay a family fee,“ she says. The open training sessions are between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. „The open houses are already underway and will run until October.“

Helga has been the chairperson of Þyt for nearly five years. „I got involved through my daughter. I mostly go on the guard boat. Otherwise, I follow all the children's activities and go to the competitions,“ she says. One such event is taking place this weekend at Ýmir in Kópavogur.

Competition this weekend

„Yes, our Optimist kids are going to that regatta. Some of them have been sailing for a few years, but others are new. They are optimistic, cheerful kids who enjoy sailing.“

Yes, wonderful, as you can see in these fantastic pictures. Go, Þytur!
