300 Hafnarfjörður families receive support from the Mother's Allowance Committee

The committee supported the lives of Hafnarfjörður families

Everything is falling into place for the Hafnarfjörður Mother's Allowance Committee, which is distributing food and gifts tomorrow to around 300 single parents and families from Hafnarfjörður. Around 300 children are part of the families.

Mayor Valdimar Víðisson dropped by Strandgatan just now, where the committee has set up for the year and is now tying up all loose ends ahead of the allocation.

„The Mother's Pension Committee of Hafnarfjörður is one of those pillars of the community that people might not always see, but which is crucial when the going gets tough. We in Hafnarfjörður are deeply grateful for the warm and proactive work that takes place there, and as mayor, I am proud that the town stands firmly behind this important work,“ says Valdimar, as the town of Hafnarfjörður supports the committee both financially and by providing premises.

Numerous businesses are standing firmly behind the Mother's Allowance Committee, as are various charities. The Lions Club of Hafnarfjörður donated two million krónur to the committee, which is the largest single financial contribution. The Lions Club Ásbjörn also provided a number of gifts in collaboration with Icewear. The families receive gift cards for the Krónan and Fjarðarkaup supermarkets, with Fjarðarkaup partnering with Lions, Kiwanis and Rotary for the purchase of the cards. The Oddfellow organisation also supports the committee.

Bread, treats, butter, cheese and fizzy drinks will be in the parcels for the families, who can also choose from knitted gems and other garments.

Petrea Ómarsdóttir, chairwoman of the Mæðrastyrksnefnd Hafnarfjarðar, says there has been an increased demand for assistance this Christmas. This comes as no surprise. Rents have risen, as have the prices of food and other essentials for families. People are very grateful for the committee's work. She feels that businesses are now stepping up even more than in recent years. The need is great.
