Most Swan-certified flats are located in Hafnarfjörður, according to figures from the Environmental and Energy Authority. Of the 1,050 Swan-certified units, 444 are in Hafnarfjörður, or 42.1%.

The organisation recently presented the construction company MótX with a certificate confirming the Swan certification for the third section of Hringhamar 9-19 in Hafnarfjörður, Hringhamar 17-19. This completes the certification of all 118 flats in their three buildings. The project is one of the largest multi-unit residential construction projects to have received the Swan Certification in Iceland.

Good location in Hafnarfjörður

G. Lilja Ólafsdóttir, a specialist in the institution's circular economy team, says that nearly 700 flats in Hafnarfjörður are either in the process of obtaining Swan Certification or have already been certified. She is really pleased with the situation in Hafnarfjörður when it comes to Swan Certification.

„The situation clearly shows how important it is for local authorities to offer incentives and financial incentives for environmental certifications. The discount that Hafnarfjörður provides on plot and road construction fees has helped to offset the costs associated with the certification process, thereby encouraging more parties to seek environmental certification,“ she says.“

„This development has also contributed to an increased understanding of sustainable construction. An increasing number of contractors and designers now have a better understanding of the process, which facilitates the implementation of environmentally friendly solutions and strengthens the sector's overall expertise.“

Looking to the future

Mayor Valdimar Víðisson says it is important to look to the future when it comes to housing for families in Hafnarfjörður. He is proud of how well environmentally friendly construction has been managed in Hafnarfjörður. „It's an increased quality of life to be able to live in healthy and desirable housing. It's fantastic to see how well construction companies have risen to the challenge and changed their working methods to meet these requirements.“

Svanur Karl Grjetarsson, Managing Director of MótX, says the support and encouragement of the City of Hafnarfjörður has been invaluable on MótX's Svans certification journey.

Built responsibly

„We are extremely proud to receive the Swan Certification for this development. It confirms that we are building responsibly, both for the environment and for those who will be living in the flats.“ The decision to take this route was made early in the process.

„We wanted to ensure that the project met the highest standards of sustainability. It's not just about the environment, but also about the quality of the buildings and a healthy living environment.“

This is not MótX's first Swan certification, and more are in the pipeline. „We have more under construction that are aiming for such certification. This is a path we intend to continue on,“ he says.

The Nordic Swan Certification is an environmental label that covers the entire life cycle of a building – from design and material selection to operation and maintenance. The certification ensures that buildings meet requirements for a lower carbon footprint, better energy efficiency, and increased well-being for their occupants.
