Fifty pole-vaulting competitions in the harbour at Hafnarfjörður on Saturday. The competition is held worldwide by Red Bull and, for the first time, is being held in Iceland. It starts at 2 p.m.
The pole is 12 metres high and slippery. It is bolted down and stands out over the sea, similar to what is known as the pillow fight on Seaman's Day.
Inga María Hjartardóttir, Brand Manager for Red Bull in Iceland, says there are nearly 150 people on a waiting list hoping to take part. The minimum age for participation is 18. „But everyone is welcome to watch,“ she says. „The fun then ends with a music party at Ægi 220 at 4 p.m. Diljá Péturs, Issi and Eyþór Wöhler will be performing.“
The rescue team will be on site for safety, and a hot tub to warm the competitors up again after the fall.
„It's a dream to hold the event in Hafnarfjörður. We who work on this all live in Hafnarfjörður. A short commute,“ says Inga cheerfully, excited for Saturday. A basket truck will be on site to add fat to even the odds between the competitors.
The competition is held at the harbour of Hafnarfjörður.
