Hafnarfjörður, model town of the Hlíðarendi Cub Scout Group

„That's very impressive,“ said Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, the mayor, when she visited the children at the Hlíðarendi nursery school this morning. For the past few weeks, they have been working on their graduation project, taking trips around the town, getting to know the town even better and artistically building the main buildings in their school.

„What is the name of the town?“ the mayor asked the nursery's graduating class from Hlíðarendi when she came to enjoy their final project at the nursery. "Hvolpasveitabær," they replied cheerfully. The town was colourful and splendid, and the models of its main gems were beautifully detailed.

A lot of work behind it

It takes about four working weeks to build the town. Earlier, they went on field trips around their town. They have been to many places, including the National Museum. After the visits, they meet and decide which landmarks should characterise their town. The Fjarðar, the Hamar and Hellisgerði adorn Hvolpasveit village. The town's well-known buildings, swimming pools and road network are also completed.

A decades-long tradition

The mayor's visit is an annual event, but each exhibition is unique, as it is conceived and designed by the graduating class each time. This tradition has been upheld for over 20 years. All the children come forward with suggestions for a name for their town, and this time, Puppy Farm Town won. Yes, it was great fun this morning; the children were very keen to show the mayor their work. It's quite clear that we have the future engineers, construction managers, artists, project managers and designers among us.

A huge congratulations on your Puppy Farm. It's wonderful.
