Grýlu's cave stands in front of Warehouse of the Folk Museum on Vesturgatan. Children and adults can pop in and enjoy. The Spanish artist Juan, who goes by the artist name Juan Picture Art, designed the look of the cave, while set designer Sara Blöndal designed the interior.

Juan has recently made his mark on Hafnarfjörður with some fun street art. This summer, he transformed various infrastructure elements, such as electrical boxes and sewer covers, into works of art. They catch the eye and instead of grey boxes and brown lids, you can now see a viking, a fridge, a blue opal shark and a turf house, which Juan says is the very inspiration for him being asked to design the Gryla Hell.

The Grýla cave, however, is not painted, which until now has been Juan's speciality. „I was asked to change one of the small Christmas wooden houses, like the ones in the Christmas Village, into a turf house. After some thought, I felt that paint didn't adequately capture the moss and grass texture of the turf houses, so I resorted to using the artificial grass. It helped a lot,“ says Juan.

„I wanted their distinctive appearance to come across as best as possible.“ The work therefore took him in a new direction, from brushes to material. „I'm really pleased with the result.“

The Spanish artist Juan has a number of street art works in Hafnarfjörður. He has now also designed a grýla lair by the Packhouse of the Folk Museum.
