Hafnarfjörður Harbour is seeking to hire a Harbour Pilot/Captain for a 100% position. The role involves piloting and guiding vessels, ship management, and other harbour services, including the reception and servicing of ships in Hafnarfjörður Harbour and Straumsvík.  The daily working hours are from 07:30 to 15:30 on weekdays, in addition to which shifts are worked on evenings, nights and weekends.

Key responsibilities and duties:

  • Port agency for ships to and from Hafnarfjörður Harbour/Straumsvík, and also assistance for nearby ports such as Helguvík.
  • Captaincy of the harbour's pilot boats, Hamri and Þróttur.
  • Round-the-clock watch management every three weeks. Management of daily operations in consultation with the harbour master and the on-duty foreman of harbour staff.
  • Responsibility for the harbour's 24-hour duty phone for harbour pilotage and other administrative duties on behalf of the harbour master.
  • Maritime Security Officer in the port security area – liaising with the Maritime Administration and other relevant authorities.
  • Manages the movement of vessels in the port, determining their berths and intra-port movements on behalf of the Port Director, in consultation with ship masters and agents/freight forwarders.
  • Other tasks assigned to an employee by a superior.

Educational and competency requirements:

  • Master's Certificate D (3 points)
  • Extensive experience in ship management
  • Extensive knowledge of the shipping fleet and fisheries
  • Good experience in management and management skills
  • Initiative, organisation and independent working methods
  • Full driving licence
  • Course at the Seafarers' Accident Prevention School
  • Good customer service, communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and deal with challenging situations
  • Good physical fitness to cope with challenging situations/tasks.
  • Good command of Icelandic and English
  • Good general computer skills

Remuneration is in accordance with the collective agreement between the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities and the Association of Shipmasters. As provisions of the Port Protection Act are in force in the Port of Hafnarfjörður's port area, a criminal record certificate must be submitted with the application.
