Ævar the Scientist is everywhere at Whale Island School
The corridors of Hvaleyrarskóli were packed this morning when scientist Ævar paid a visit. The reading sprint concluded with an exceptionally successful harvest festival.
A world of adventure at Hvaleyrarskóli
The corridors of Hvaleyrarskóli were packed this morning when scientist Ævar paid a visit. The pupils had prepared for his arrival well. Every single wall was decorated with pictures and art they had created from his 'Your Own' books. The parents took the work outside.
„I came here before they started the reading sprint and was telling them about my books. But I had no idea it would be this impressive,“ said Ævar the Scientist as he walked through the corridors of Hvaleyrarskóli, admiring the results.
„I'm very scared to walk through here.“ The scientist and actor must not have gone through the sixth-formers' haunted house then. He must have been properly scared, it was that well done.
„I think the work the school staff and pupils have put into this is incredibly beautiful, but also the school's imagination to think of doing something like this, and to take the time to engage with the books in this way at school.“ Year 4 have become experts in space and Year 3 in dinosaurs.
„This is incredibly well and beautifully done,“ says Ævar. The haunted house was inspired by the book Skólalita. „Wow, wow, really brilliant,“ he said after a visit.
Ævar has written numerous books, plays and easy-reading books. The next one is coming out in May. He takes part in the spring and Christmas book floods – he is a prolific writer.
Vala Björk Stefánsdóttir, the deputy head teacher, says the run-up to the reading sprint was all about reading Ævar's books. The children read extra-much at home. Then three days were spent preparing for this open day, which took place today.
„All the classes took part,“ says Vala. „The Year 10s ran the haunted house, and you're not allowed in unless you're with an adult.“ The teachers are really proud of the result, as the school looks magnificent after this reading spree of Ævar's books.
Among Ævar's works are the 'Your Own' books.
