Local elections will take place on 16 May 2026.
Polling in Hafnarfjörður for the local elections on 16 May will be open from 9 am to 10 pm. There are two polling stations: Lækjarskóli at Sólvangsvegur 4 and the Ásvellir sports centre. Voters must identify themselves to the polling staff at the polling station by presenting a valid form of photo ID.
Election Commission
The Returning Officers in Hafnarfjörður are: Þórdís Bjarnadóttir, Hildur Helga Gísladóttir and Helena Mjöll Jóhannsdóttir. The Returning Officer's office will be at Lækjarskóli on polling day during the poll. After the poll has closed, the Returning Officer's office will move to the Ásvellir Sports Centre. The vote count will take place at the Ásvellir sports centre and will begin after the polls close at 22:00. Telephone numbers at the polling stations: Lækjarskóli – 555 0585 and Ásvellir – 525 8700.
Absentee voting
If voters cannot vote on polling day, it is possible to vote by post, at the county clerk's office, or abroad. Postal voting at the county clerk's office for the local elections will be available from 17 April 2026.
Electoral register
The electoral register for the City of Hafnarfjörður for the local elections on 16 May will be available for public inspection at the City Hall of Hafnarfjörður, Service Desk, Strandgata 8-10, from 25 April 2026. Voters are encouraged to check that their names are on the electoral register. Any comments regarding the electoral register should be directed to the National Registry of Iceland.
Voters can check where they are on the electoral register for the local council elections. Entering a National Insurance number brings up the name, home address and local authority. Information about the polling station and division should also appear here. Voters are on the electoral register in the local authority where they have their registered home address three weeks before polling day. Changing your home address after this time will not change your registration.

The Returning Officer for Hafnarfjörður has accepted six electoral lists for the local council elections in Hafnarfjörður. All the lists have been declared valid. They are: Framsókn, Viðreisn, the Independence Party, the Centre Party, the Social Democratic Party and Vinstrið.
