Enrolment has opened for children starting Year 1 of primary school in Hafnarfjörður in the autumn of 2022, and the first priority deadline for applications is 1 February. Hafnarfjörður's primary schools are open to all children, regardless of where they live in the town, and parents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the schools' activities. Hafnarfjörður is a single school district divided into school catchment areas, and a pupil's registered address determines which local school they are assigned to. It is possible to apply for a school in another area, and an application made before 1 February can be a deciding factor in whether a place at a school outside one's own catchment area can be offered.
Enrolment of children in primary school is the responsibility of parents/guardians.
Registration is done online via MY PAGES under: Applications – Primary Schools – Primary School Admissions. Please note that applications for Hafnarfjörður's primary schools can only be submitted via the town's website. Applications for other primary schools in the municipality must be submitted directly to the relevant school and, if/when that school place is accepted, you must apply for confirmation of that placement on My Pages on hafnarfjordur.is
Further information will be sent from the school closer to the time.
As spring approaches, the school where a child is placed will send parents/guardians all the necessary information about the school's operations, including information on registrations for after-school club and meal plans, a play scheme for 6-year-olds in August before primary school starts, and anything else that is important to know.
