The country's nurseries have the day today!
On Nursery School Day, it is both important and well-deserved to shine a special light on the great and good work that takes place within Hafnarfjörður's nursery schools. Low-key, varied, adapted and refreshing celebrations have been taking place in the nurseries this week, and the coming week will also be marked, to some extent, by festivities, as the day is a big and welcome one.

On Nursery School Day, it is both important and well-deserved to shine a special light on the great and good work that takes place within Hafnarfjörður's nursery schools. Low-key, varied, adapted and refreshing celebrations have been taking place in the nurseries for the past week, and the coming week will also be marked, to some extent, by festivities, as the day is a major and welcome occasion. Around World Nursery Day, the partly planned and ambitious school programme gives way to different kinds of work and activities, and in many places, the day is varied with, for example, station-based work and a different kind of afternoon snack. The pandemic continues to have an impact on the work of the nursery, but the ambitious and creative staff are exceptionally good at finding solutions and approaches within the nursery's work.
Dental health and maths often take priority
For several years, many nurseries have killed two birds with one stone, linking their celebrations to both Mathematics Day and the dental health week of the Office of the Chief Medical Officer and the Icelandic Dental Association. The break has therefore involved singing, work and creating materials around maths, teeth and the children's dental health. In this way, the nursery staff have, among other things, contributed to further opening the children's eyes to the importance of good dental care, a generally healthy diet, and minimising their consumption of sugar and sweets. The nursery school is a diverse learning community for the youngest pupils, where children engage in various activities that empower them in play and work.
„The importance of nursery provision has become particularly apparent during the Covid-19 pandemic, as great emphasis has been placed on keeping all nurseries open and daily operations running to support the well-being and happiness of the children themselves, and not least the functioning of society. During a pandemic, the closure of nurseries can have a significant and knock-on effect on the cycle of society and the economy. The staff of Hafnarfjörður's nurseries have recognised this importance and have actively participated in all the adjustments and flexibility that the pandemic has required. On National Day Nursery Day, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and management of Hafnarfjörður's nurseries once again for their professional and important contribution.“ says Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður. The mayor has traditionally visited one nursery school within the municipality for the occasion, but such a visit will not take place again this year, in light of restrictions and the minimisation of adult movement between the schools.
About Nursery School Day
This is the 15th time that the Day of the Preschool has been celebrated in a formal way. The Association of Early Childhood Educators, the Ministry of Education, the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities and Home-School are organising the day, as on 6 February 1950, pioneers of early childhood education founded their first association. The day is also intended to draw attention to the status of the nursery school, its value to the nation's wealth and to all culture. The day is celebrated throughout the country to draw special attention to the nursery school stage, its importance and value for families in the country and for Icelandic business life.
