Creative Summer Jobs – Hremma
Hrafnhildur Emma Björnsdóttir, “HREMMA”, is a Hafnarfjörður-based artist and writer. This summer, Hremma is working on writing and illustrating the Christmas calendar 'Katla and Leó Save Christmas' and adapting it into a book. The idea has evolved a great deal since its inception; what was first intended as television content became a book, then a comic book, and now, once again, a book.

This summer, Hremma is working on writing and illustrating the Christmas calendar 'Katla and Leó Save Christmas' and turning it into a book. The idea has evolved a great deal since its inception; what was first intended as a television programme became a book, then a comic book, and now, once again, a book.
The book „Katla and Leó save Christmas“ tells the story of the adventures of the siblings, Katla and Leó, and their dads, Grím and Kára, in the run-up to Christmas. The family lights the four Advent candles, shops for Christmas presents at Kringlan and the children get presents in their shoes from 13 famous brothers. The siblings discover the secret of the Yule Lads and must save more than just them before the clock strikes six on Christmas Eve. The story also involves earthquakes, a rescue mission, and Grýla's attempt to learn how to use a smartphone.
Hrafnhildur Emma says: What's more summery than an Advent calendar in July? I got the idea for Kátla and Leó's Christmas adventure in 2018 when RÚV's Idea Days were looking for Christmas content. The idea has developed a lot since then; the television programme became a book, then a comic book, and now a book again. Who knows, maybe one day it will make it to television.
Katla and Leó Save Christmas is an adventurous Christmas calendar.
The story of the siblings is set in the familiar environment of Icelandic culture. This is an important story that increases the visibility of diversity in daily life. But there has been a call in society for more visible diversity in television and other entertainment. News in recent months has shown how great the need is, as there has been a setback in the struggle for LGBTQ+ people, and Icelanders with roots in other countries face constant prejudice or microaggressions.
National Day in Grýla's Cave
Hremma wrote, illustrated and also read the story “National Day in Grýla's Lair” at the Hafnarfjörður Library on the 17th of June, for a large group of children, and it was a great success. The children sat captivated, listening to the story and following the pictures on a large screen as it was read. Hremma illustrates everything herself, and you can see some of her pictures below.

About Creative Summer Jobs 2022
In the summer of 2021, the City of Hafnarfjörður, in collaboration with the city's youth centre, Hamarinn, decided to revive the “Creative Summer Jobs” project, which had been run in the summer of 2017. Individuals and groups aged 18-20 were also invited to submit ideas for creative projects in Hafnarfjörður. Selected groups were given the opportunity to work on various creative projects in different areas of the arts, which would also enliven the town's social life and delight tourists and residents in one way or another. The staff of Creative Summer Jobs, run as part of the Hafnarfjörður Summer School, are tasked with bringing the town to life, making it more fun, beautiful and diverse with artistic and creative events. The projects are varied and appeal to different age groups and interests. Klara Ósk Elíasdóttir is the project manager for Creative Summer Jobs.
