A new housing estate south of the Reykjanesbraut, on the outskirts of Hafnarfjörður.
Hamranes is a 25-hectare new-build area rising south of the Skarðshlíðarhverfi and Vallahverfi neighbourhoods in Hafnarfjörður. Work on the plots in Hamranes began in early 2021, and a residential neighbourhood of around 1,900 homes will be built there over the coming months and years. The estimated population is around 4,750. The neighbourhood will include a primary school, two four-form-entry nurseries, and a care home. Development in the area is ongoing, and the first residents have already moved in.

Nearly 2,560 homes for around 6,350 residents in two new neighbourhoods
In total, the population of Hamranes and Skarðshlíðarhverfi is projected to be just over 6,000, in around 2,500 households. The Vallahverfi district, which is closest to these areas, currently has just over 5,700 residents. It is therefore anticipated that the total population in this area south of the Reykjanesbraut in the western part of Hafnarfjörður will double in the coming years.

Major infrastructure development
Significant infrastructure development is taking place alongside increased demand and development, and services in the area have increased significantly in recent months and years. At Ásvellir, the sports facilities are exemplary, and in 2021 the first sod was cut for a new and magnificent football arena, which further enhances and strengthens the facilities. The road was opened to traffic on Dual carriageway Reykjanesbraut in November 2020 and Ásvallabraut, which connects the new housing estate to Kaldárselsveg, opened in the autumn of 2021. A primary school, a nursery school and a music school are already in operation in the Skarðshlíðarhverfi district.
