HHH – Queer meet-ups in Hafnarfjörður

Freedom to love. Freedom to be. Freedom to celebrate.

HHH have been based at the youth club Hrauni in Víðistaðaskóli since the beginning. The meet-up is intended for young people in years 5-10 who identify as queer, are on the spectrum in some way, are into queer concepts and/or are interested in queer issues. The model is the Queer Youth Centre in Reykjavík, where meet-ups and group activities have been more successful than expected.

„We are four experienced youth centre staff working in HHH. When young people bring ideas to us, we do our very best to put them into practice in collaboration with them. The young people who worked in peer education this summer, for example, had the idea that Hafnarfjörður would once again take part in the Pride Parade this August, and we at HHH helped them to make it happen. The march went brilliantly, and it was lovely to see how many people from Hafnarfjörður joined us.“ says Sigmar Ingi Sigurgeirsson, and with Sigmar work Melkorka Assa Arnarsdóttir, Ragnhildur Ioana Guðmundsdóttir and Dagný Káradóttir at HHH.

HHH is open every Thursday from 19:30-22 for pupils in Years 8-10, and every other Thursday from 17:00-19:00 for pupils in Years 5-7. The aim of the club is for the young people to feel safe and welcome, and to have the opportunity to flourish. The programme is largely based on peer education, and the young people are tasked with, among other things, raising awareness of issues affecting LGBTQ+ youth and capturing the diversity of Hafnarfjörður.
