Saturday, 25 November, 1 pm - 3 pm Hafnarborg offers Multilingual art workshop where Arabic typographic symbols will be the inspiration for artistic creation under the guidance of the Lebanese artist Yara Zein. The workshop's languages are Icelandic, English and Arabic.

In the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore the beauty of Arabic calligraphy and learn some of the fundamentals of Arabic typography in a fun and creative environment. All materials will be provided, such as stencils, paper and multicoloured pens, which participants will use to create their own artworks to take home.

Yara Zein (b. 1995) is a Lebanese artist based in Iceland. She holds a BA in Fine Art and Architecture from the Académie Libanaise des Beaux Arts in Beirut and an MFA in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University, England. Yara's work reflects her background and experience of growing up in Lebanon in the aftermath of the civil war. In her audio-visual works, Yara often explores contradictory ideas of social amnesia, pleasure and joy within the context of a complex social environment.

In My Language is a series of events that aims to increase access to Hafnarborg for people from diverse backgrounds by welcoming visitors in different languages. The event is a collaboration between Hafnarborg and GETU – a charity (Get Together) that supports refugees and asylum seekers in Hafnarfjörður. The series of events is supported by the museum fund.

The workshop is open to all ages, but no knowledge of Arabic calligraphy or experience of art-making is required. The workshop takes place on the ground floor of the museum, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. As always, participation in workshops and admission to the museum's exhibitions are free of charge.
